There are many initiatives within the EU, where lighting or photonics play a role or can be attached. We have chosen some of the most significant initiatives listed in short below and described further in the site bar. Please do not perceive this as a complete overview, but more as a helping hand on the way to understand the lighting landscape of the EU in terms of reports, politics, strategies, papers and action plans.

Horizon 2020
Horizon 2020 – the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation – is running from 2014 to 2020 with an € 80 billion budget.

Key Enabling Technologies, KETs
The European Commission has published an action plan to promote six kinds of Key Enabling Technologies: Micro-/nanoelectronics, Nanotechnology, Photonics, Advanced materials, Industrial biotechnology, and Advanced manufacturing technologies.

A roadmap of photonics communities in Europe
‘The Photonics Multiannual Strategic Roadmap’ displays important photonics research and innovation challenges in Europe, as well as crosscutting Key Enabling Technology issues. The aim is set up of a Photonics Public Private Partnership (PPP) within the new EU Framework Programme Horizon 2020.
